Art and sport both require a balance between technique and personal expression. Both arouse emotions. This season Baum und Pferdgarten approaches these two worlds from a Finnish viewpoint, exploring the work of Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck, and Formula 1, the unofficial national sport of Finland.

Schjerfbeck, who gained international recognition in the 1910s and 1920s, is known for her tactile paintings, outstanding use of colour, and her lifelong focus on womanhood. Formula 1, with its graphic block colours and smooth slick surfaces that evoke the aesthetics of the 1980s & 1990s, represents the ultimate expression of masculinity.

The collection combines functional sportswear with feminine fashion, expressing a sense of polarity; pragmatism versus preciousness. These dichotomous viewpoints are harmonious in practice because, ultimately, they reflect the duality of reality and of the people wearing the clothes.
